Have you ever heard someone play the piano and make it sound like a waterfall? We were so lucky on Friday evening to be entertained by someone who did just that! We had a concert in Campion Hall given by Fred Musoke on piano and Claire Hawkes on her clarinet. Their repertoire was extensive and thrilling and some said the most amazing example of musicianship they had ever heard (sorry Mr James!) They did a Master Class for the Clarinet and the two volunteers (Emily and Megan) should be proud of themselves as they had to bare their clarinet souls for all to see. We raised about £500 to send to Uganda to help the Kampala Music school and its young musicians.
There were 9 fixtures on Saturday and one of them was the last match for the Upper VI hockey players. Laura managed to score 2 goals in her last ever match for St Mary’s 1st XI. The evening was a busy one too as there were 45 girls at three different houses at Sherborne Boys’ School and 40 at Milton Abbey. At school we had our old favourite “Exlis” the Breakdancer to give LV and below a lesson in Breakdancing! He did a demonstration which would have made your eyes water! All girls enjoyed their respective events and hopefully made some new friends whilst rekindling old friendships from Prep school days.
Sunday was also a busy day. After a lovely Mass in the morning, and a lovely roast lunch, over 70 girls went to the cinema in Yeovil in two coaches. Another 12 were climbing in Shaftesbury Upper School on their indoor climbing wall and they thoroughly enjoyed that experience.
The Junior School spent the afternoon rehearsing for their production which will take place in a few weeks time. Make sure you have reserved your tickets!
The weekend ended with a talk by Joe Stead who is an expert on Paul Robeson. He gave us an insight into his life, his music and his struggles for equality. This was particularly useful for all historians and as Mrs Raffray put it “ he talked about everything which encompasses what St Mary’s is all about!” It was a fitting end to a really busy weekend. See Joe Stead’s website http://www.joestead.com/
Next weekend is Exeat so we will be looking forward to the following weekend and the Curry Quiz to raise money for the World Challenge expedition (see the parent portal posting for information,) a walk around the Dorset coastline, tie dying, climbing and a talk by our very own Mrs Reddyhoff!
