FOWLES FAILS - BUT ONLY JUST
... at Wigmore House (the home of our best readers).
THE WIGMORE READING GROUP’s initial poll gave John Fowles’ The Collector a massive 7.5 on the Wigmore scale. However, following heated debate centring on the way the novel attempts to manipulate our moral response, for the first time in Wigmore history it was clear that the exit poll score was going to be lower. After a recount it was confirmed that The Collector had been awarded 7.3 leaving Rose Tremain as still our novelist of choice (and at least one English teacher fuming).
| Rose Tremain |
The Road Home | 7.4 |
| David Mitchell | Black Swan Green | 6.1 |
| John Fowles | The Collector | 7.3 |
Our next novel will be One Day by David Nicholls, described as 'The novel of the year - a brilliantly funny and moving will-they, won't-they romance tracing a relationship on the same day each day for two decades' and by the Times as 'A wonderful, wonderful book: wise, funny, perceptive, compassionate and often unbearably sad . . .”
So will Nicholls be good enough to take on Rose Tremain?
