Stop Press! June 2010
What a fantastic way to end this very busy term. Last week our amazing aquatic squad plunged their way into First position in the Interhouse Swimming Gala with amazing performances from every one of them, ably assisted by the L4 girls who will be joining us in September.
Today, I have just left the Sports Field where again Harewellians romped home in 1st position. It was a really exciting morning and every one took part with enthusiasm and determination. Again, there were some stunning performances and all gave of their very best. We are all overwhelmed with this magnificent triumph and so proud of them all! They now need a relaxing and enjoyable holiday, they deserve it!

Summer Term 2010
As usual, the year has galloped by a pace and here we are nearly at the end of a hectic and exam filled term. The U5 students are joyously leaving for the summer, having finished their GCSEs. They will only return briefly for Parents Day and then the long and hopefully hot summer awaits them, full of exploits and adventures before they settle to the serious business of running this fine House. Sadly we must bid farewell to the wondrous Prefect Team who have made such efforts to encourage, support and enthuse the lower years and we wish them success next term in Mary Ward House. They go with our love and gratitude for the huge contribution they have all made to the happiness and success of Harewell.
We say farewell also to Ana, Cristina and Carlota who have courageously braved this last year with us and are now returning to Mexico and Spain to continue their studies. We all admire them for their determination and for the enthusiastic manner in which they have all played their part in this community
Ana (L6t) writes …
“Before coming I felt very nervous and excited at the same time, I was curious about how life at St-Mary’s was going to be, especially in my house.
There was nothing to worry about since I was put in Harewell, the best house ever. Mrs Holman was incredibly charming and warm, she made me feel welcomed immediately and I felt like I was at home, and the friends I have met here I know for sure I will never forget.
Being here has made me know different people, food, traditions and another way of living life from which I have learnt plenty of things.
All the happy hours, the House Party at Christmas or watching a film in the common room … those are the exceptional things I will miss when I will go back home
Thank you very much for a great year in a great house.”
Cristina (U5) writes …
“From the first moment here at St. Mary’s, Harewell has offered me a great time. The girls here have become, without a doubt, some of my best friends and I’m honest when I say I’m going to miss them so much next year. They have all been fantastic, I love them so much and could really have not asked for more. Harewell is the best house in all the school!! This house, this home, this family, has made my experience much more special with all those happy hours, trips, with the fantastic pancakes mornings and my year group supper (which was delicious). I’m really, really glad this was my house, and I mean it when I say I love Harewell and the people here. In addition to this, our fantastic housemistress Mrs. Holman the nicest, funniest and greatest housemistress ever in school who has always been there to help me, and cared about me all the time makes it even better. And our lovelies Mrs. Samoluk and Mrs Shuttler who have always made my stay easier, and kept my energies on, by sending me to bed early. During this year, whenever I felt let down, or had any kind of problem I always had loads of people to support me, and count on. What I can now say, is that I love Harewell in all senses.”
Carlota (U4) writes ...
“Harewell is a wonderful house. We have two house assistants, Mrs Shutler who does not let the bed bug bite and if they do, she hits them with a shoe, and Mrs Samo, who feeds us with lots of pancakes until we are full. Finally, we have our housemistress (the best): Mrs Holman, who loves us so, so much.
The girls here are full of laughs and smiles, and have made me feel welcomed since the day I arrived. We have shared so many memories that we will remember forever.
Thank you so much for this wonderful year.”
DofE Expedition: The sun is thankfully shining today as 10 brave Harewellians have set out to take their Bronze Medal, a part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. The size of their rucksacks was monstrous but they are an amazing gang and I know they will all stoically complete the task! There are blister plasters ready in the infirmary.
World Cup: Last week they also joined in eagerly with the U4s to play our own World Cup. Harewell became the Italian Team, they designed posters, flags and painted their faces in the appropriate colours before launching into a Penalty Shoot Out. I cannot say they won but their commitment was total and they could not be faulted for their exuberance!
So much has taken place this year and I cannot list it all! Suffice to say, your daughters have been most busily involved since they returned in January. Next week we have both an Interhouse Swimming Gala and a Tennis Tournament and I know your magnificent daughters will all carry the Harewellian flag, shout the loudest and give of their very best as ever. Whether we win or not, one can always trust a Harewellian to happily participate or support and I am so proud of them all and hope they have a good rest. May I take this opportunity to wish you all a relaxing and fun filled holiday with your gorgeous girls. I will endeavour to put at least more pictures on this website next term so you can see what we have been up to.
Autumn Term 2009 in Harewell.
This term we have taken off to a flying start in Harewell, with all the new girls joining us, the activities and endless happy hours and, of course, chocolate.
The first weekend we arrived at school we had a happy hour, which included much eating of chocolate and everything else delicious yet very bad for you! Pancakes have been made endlessly on our new pancake maker, which, thanks to Givendale, we now have in our kitchen. The endless supply of cheese, for cheese toasties, has helped us to cope with the demanding studies now being set. The atmosphere in Harewell is so positive and encouraging because we have Mrs Holman at our centre. She is always there to support and comfort us and to share a laugh with us. The gales of laughter from her flat this term are, I think, unmatchable - especially from those Upper Fours.
All the new girls have started the term with real enthusiasm. Their high spirits and wit are keeping everyone on their toes. The Lower Five are, as usual, keeping very busy with sport and with two of them being form captains, and they are well on their way to success. The Upper Five are as ever full of life, watching the best films in the world and keeping everyone in order in the House. The Lower Sixth have, I think, consumed the entire kitchen supply of bread and chocolate spread, enjoyed the endless toasties and hot chocolates and are keeping their energy going for their studies. Ms Shutler is trying to keep order in the house and as usual is doing a fantastic job making sure everyone is in bed and behaving and doing the right thing at the right time. Mrs Samolock is also doing a marvellous, job making sure everyone is being good and is on top form, with help in the kitchen always on offer to cook for everyone.
Ellie and Claudie are busy organising things for everyone to do in house; putting on the film “Hannah Montana” was a great start to their organisation of events. Rose and Emily are, as usual, busy on their art putting it up around the house and collecting Harewellians’ art from here there and everywhere. Sophia is monitoring the gold and Mary Ward tickets as they come flooding in, and dealing with the odd lavender ticket that may have slipped through. Ana has started St Mary’s with zeal, helping all the overseas students feel welcome and happy. Hannah is so efficient with organising gifts that she already has everyone’s present for the rest of the year wrapped and named. Henny is, as always, being a star going round checking everyone is happy and helping all the new girls settle in. Elo and Rose have been by my side all the time, keeping smiles on all faces. Tati has settled in quickly and has joined the large group of us helping in every way to maintain the close, supportive atmosphere in the House.
In our view, Harewell by far is the best House to be in; Mrs Holman is amazing and her flat door is always open for a recharge whether we need a quick chat or some comforting chocolate!
We all have high hopes for the rest of the term; bring on Christmas!

Spring Term 2009
Snow
Last week St Mary’s was a winter wonderland. Although not every day we had lessons, we did have structured but fun activities, Including Tobogganing, Quizzes and Inter house snowman building which were just a few of them. Of course Harewell must have won the snowman building as ours was very creative and life-size! Although we missed a few lessons we still managed to have P.E lessons where we would head down to the sloped hill for tobogganing, and although we ended up with bumps and bruises, we still had a lot of laughs.

Ice Skating
On Sunday 1st February, all boarders from Lower III to Lower V went ice skating in Bournemouth, this was great fun and everyone enjoyed it thoroughly. It was entertaining being on the ice with our friends, all at very different levels but all helping each other and having lots of bumps and laughs! After leaving the ice-rink, we headed down to what we found a cold and windy beach and after playing around by the waves for a bit, we all had the common sense to quickly run into the souvenir shop and into the warmth; we bought our huge sticks of rock as a souvenir to remind us of our “sunny” day in Bournemouth!

Winchester Social
On Saturday 31st January there was a social for U4 to U6 with College house and a return social for Harewell with Kingsgate house from Winchester. U4 had an enjoyable with pizza and chips for supper and then ice cream for pudding. It was a delicious meal and we really enjoyed the company of the Winchester boys!
After a delicious meal, we lead the boys into the hall for the disco, there was really good music and all of us had a really good time. The disco started at 8:30 and ended at 10:00, we thank everyone who put their effort into this social because it turned out to be great fun! The professional DJ was so good and put on some great music!

Well done Harewell
After a long and hard first term back at school with lots of gold and Mary ward tickets we are very pleased to announce that Harewell has won the house shield for gaining the most house points! We are all very happy with this outcome and are trying to uphold our lead by trying even harder to get more points! Because we have won this honour we are going on a celebratory trip to the cinema or theatre! We are all looking forward to our house trip and many more wins in the future!

Christmas House Party
Last end of term Harewell had its Christmas house party in which the theme was ‘celebrities’. The Lower six organized it brilliantly with lots of fun games and yummy refreshments. Each year was given a different type of celebrity, Upper four were singers and bands, Lower five were actors, Upper five were wags and Lower six were princesses! Everyone pulled together a great costume. The games were very entertaining including pass the parcel where even some teachers took part! Other games such as the chocolate, elimination and spoon games all had every one excited and cheerful. All years came up with a brilliant showcase, Upper five won the best act for the third time running with a very impressive dance routine to Mamma Mia by ABBA!
