Haiti Appeal Update 07.03.2010

Haiti"Hello there,

The 2 nurses have now left Haiti and are currently flying back to the UK. Flor will be leaving on Wednesday evening.

They have been working so hard, in so many roles which have been extremely challenging. In addition to tending to the injured at the clinic, many of whom have severe injuries/amputations, they have been visiting several local orhanages to help care for the babies and young children. The orhanages have been delighted to receive the baby clothes and supplies brought by the team. The conditions are not good and at one orphanage many babies had died in the earthquake. The children are suffering from psoriasis.

HaitiAmid the pain and turmoil, the need to hold on to small glimmers of hope is so necessary. A lady rushed to the clinic with her baby and put it into Flor's arms, thinking he was dying. The medics worked with him for hours and eventually he pulled through and is now doing well! The team also found a young lady called Linda on the streets. She is 16 yrs old and was wandering about crying. They learnt that Linda had lost all 11 members of her family in the disaster and was sobbing because of the hunger pain in her stomach. They have managed to stablise her condition and find her a place at the girls' orphanage. Bright Tomorrows has committed to looking after Linda and ensuring that she is able to carry on at school and get the help she needs.

In the evenings the girls have been working with teams taking food out to the many on the streets. There are still areas where food and aid is not reaching people, so these "food runs" are essential. Flor reports that for the most part people are still living on the streets. Even those whoses houses were not badly damaged do not want to go back. Flor says they are afraid and so traumatised.

HaitiFlor is tired but she is determined to do as much as she can whilst she is still there. She spoke for all three of them when she said; 'We will never see life through the same eyes again.'

Sarah"
