Mulwith House

My name is Beverley Roberts and I am Acting House Mistress. I have been a House Assistant in Mulwith for nine and a half years and I am thrilled to be given the responsibility of looking after Mulwith House for this academic year. I take on the role with great excitement and I am looking forward to a very constructive, busy and happy year leading Mulwith House into a new era. I move in to Mulwith with my husband, Charlotte my daughter who is a student at St. Marys, and my little Cairn terrier Herby.

Having spent so many years living within Mulwith as a House Assistant working alternate weeks with my partner in crime, Ms Elaine Hawkins, known fondly to all in Mulwith as AKA the mad aunt or Mama H., I believe I have a very good idea of what the girls would like from their home, whilst at school. We welcome a new House Assistant to team Mulwith, Mrs Kathy Bull. I would like to wish her a very warm welcome from all the House.

Mulwith is one of the smaller of the four main houses, comprising 38 boarder s and 27 day girls, in Upper Iv – Lower VI. Mulwith is a very happy home and girls mix very well together across the year groups with the older girls supporting and taking interest in the younger members of the house.

Mrs RobertsMrs HawkinsWe have a bright cheerful common room where girls relax and watch TV together, there is a dining area with a large table used for get together suppers with year groups, or for day girls to do their study, and where Lower VI can choose to have their breakfast. There is also more comfortable seating where girls of all year groups can relax and chat to friends. There are two computers for work and pleasure, and next to the common room is a kitchen where girls can make snacks and hot drinks in the evening with friends from Mulwith or friends from other houses. Friendships play an important part in school life and friends from other houses are always welcome in Mulwith.

Mulwith is a multi-talented house and we celebrate our many successes. Many Mulwithians are musicians, actresses, artists, sports women and participants in debates, to name but a few, but whatever the girls talents are, they all bring something special to our community. Everyone has something unique and special to offer to life at St Mary’s and we celebrate all that is special about each individual, from the lovely quiet, gentle girl who is kind to everyone to the noisiest, bubbliest housemate who keeps everyone laughing and entertained.

Mulwith has a very important place in the history of Mary Ward. She was born on 23rd January 1585 at Mulwith, near Ripon and lived there until she was five. After spending several years with her grandparents, she returned to Mulwith in 1595 and lived there until 1600. It was shortly after this that she received a call to religious life. She said, " a grace which by God's mercy I have never doubted." Many of the present Mulwithians have visited Mulwith whilst on the Upper 3 trip to York.
