St Mary's Theological Society was honoured by a visit from two Deans of the Church of England. The Very Reverend June Osbourne (Salisbury Cathedral) spoke on the subject of Freewill and Determism referencing her words to an account of the Rwandan Genocide of 1994 (a time when the majority of the audience was less than five years old). The Very Reverend Johnathan Meyrick (Exeter Cathedral) spoke about Life after Death and demonstrated how the concept of a life after death had arisen in Old Testament Scripture.
These were two very contrasting talks and the students were fortunate to have their knowledge and understanding of an area of the A level syllabus extended and, at the same time, they enjoyed two different styles of delivery.
The picture shows the Deans with some of St Mary's A level Religious Studies students. The Theological Society has arisen out of the vibrancy of Theological Study at St Mary's. This year there are 38 students taking Religious Studies as an A level and in Upper VI ten girls are going on the study Theology, Philosophy or Religious Studies at Oxford, Bristol, Edinburgh, St Andrews, Heythrop and Manchester.
The transcripts of these talks will soon be accessible on the school website.
