On Monday and Tuesday, 3rd and 4th. March, the Upper Sixth Retreat took place at The Abbey Retreat House, Glastonbury. About forty girls and four staff headed off to the awesome town of Glastonbury, once one of the most popular Marian Shrines of Europe, for two days of prayer and renewal, exploring the theme: 'The Journey of Life'. It is always a special retreat, the last at St. Mary's for so many girls who have been at the school for several years, some from Junior School days. Our theme focused on the process of life, and moving towards the next stage of the journey, that is, university, college or gap year. Miss Andrea led the retreat, assisted by other members of staff. We created a sacred space on the floor with candles and symbols, to which we added throughout the retreat.
The first session incorporated climbing the "Tor", so that with a panorama in view, the girls could contemplate the blessing that has been their spiritual and human journey at St. Mary's. We focused on change, growth and deepening friendship, as we thought about the meaning of relationship with God and others. After supper, Fr. Rodney Schofield from Sherborne said Mass in the beautiful chapel. This was followed by Night Prayer and bed.
The next day we launched into the meaning of ideals, guided by Mrs. Dee Webb, and discussed those values which have most enriched us during our years at St. Mary's. A later session, led by Mrs.Lane, helped us to prioritise the values we hold dearest in life, and which hopefully will underpin our future discernment and choices. After lunch, we had some group sharing in the lovely grounds, so close to the ancient Abbey ruins, and began to prepare the closing Liturgy with Mr. John Doyle. Our retreat was a great blessing, looking both backwards and forwards, gathering memories and harnessing hopes. We truly thank God for all the blessings we received. Ad multos annos!
