At the Rite of Welcome service the chapel is decorated with the names of all of the new girls and staff, who are welcomed individually into the school community by their sponsors and the rest of the school.  Mrs Sarah Raffray, the Deputy Head, introduces the Rite of Welcome and some of the new girls and staff give their first impressions of life at St. Mary’s.

For those without sound, some of the 'First Impressions' are given below:

Tatiana's First Impressions

I could feel my heart beating fast inside my chest.  I was so nervous my hands were sweating like rivers.
I turned to look out of the window and as I read “St. Mary’s School” I shut my eyes for a moment to think about what I was about to do.

“Breathe slowly,” Mum said in a gentle voice so that I stayed calm.  We continued on a large road full of green trees on both sides of it, one last curve and finally I saw it.

It was very different from how I had imagined it.  I should say it was much better in real life – big, magnificent and imposing.  As the car stopped and I got out I though I was going to have a heart attack, I counted like 105 beats per minute, gradually I started to feel better and holding my mum’s hand I entered the school, my name was quickly given me on a sort of sticker and two very nice girls were presented – my “guardian angels’ Briony and Mary.  They were both so nice and so friendly that I didn’t mind at all when I said good bye to my parents.

I am really looking forward to this year and I am sure I would like to come again next year.

Ella's First Impressions

For years I had heard stories about St Mary’s from my sister. Still, it was with a sense of terror that I came into the school to take my exam. Mainly because of lack of revision. That day, my very first impression of St Mary’s was smiles, lots of hugs and flicking hair.

Over the holiday I’d asked Bethany about the school, but she gave me the annoying answer that everybody was “nice”.

But, on my arrival, I found this was true! My friends were nice, the dinner ladies were nice, the teachers were nice – even Mr Daley to an extent was nice.

So I began the term and very soon I felt like I’d always been here. I was enveloped into the folds of the school. St Mary’s has an infectious atmosphere of euphoria, and very soon I had caught it.

I’ve been happy in lessons, breaks and even when I was given a yellow shirt that could have been a dress.

I always had a smile on my face.
