Art & Design

ImageArt and Design offers opportunities for pupils to:
  • develop their creativity and imagination through visual, tactile and sensory experiences;
  • develop practical, technical and critical skills and use visual and tactile language to communicate their ideas, feelings and meanings;
  • learn to make value judgements and aesthetic and practical decisions, becoming actively involved in shaping environments; explore ideas and meanings in the work of artists, craftspeople and designers and learn about the diverse roles and functions of art, craft and design in the contemporary world and in different times and cultures.

KEY STAGE 2 and 3

Lower 3 (Key stage2)

Lower 3 students are introduced to the key stage and develop their creativity and imagination through Art, Textiles and 3D Design. These help to build on their skills and improve their control of materials, tools and techniques. They increase their critical awareness of the purposes of art, craft and design in different times and cultures. They become more confident in using visual and tactile elements and materials and processes to communicate what they see, feel and think.

Upper 3, Lower 4 and Upper 4 (Key stage 3)

The intention of the key stage 3 course is to foster student’s individual creativity by extending their means of expression, and building on skills already learnt in LOWER 3.

AS and A2 ART

AS/A2 LEVEL FINE ART
OCR Advanced Subsidiary GCE Code 3801 AS
OCR Advanced GCE Code 7801 A2

AS Units 1,2 & 3
A2 Units 4,5 & 6

This syllabus is intended to form part of an educational continuum which progresses naturally from GCSE and is intended to meet the needs of the following groups of students:
  • Those who will undertake further studies in Art and Design.
  • Those who will study subjects or take up careers for which an Art and Design background is relevant.
  • Those, who whilst having interest and aptitude in the subject, are not intending to study the subject beyond A Level.
It is anticipated that candidates will have studied Art and Design for the GCSE examination although this is not a pre-requisite. The syllabus is based upon existing recognised good practice in schools and is expected that candidates who have not achieved a GCSE grade in Art and Design will at least have followed an Art and Design course at some time in their secondary school career.
Candidates will follow a Fine Art endorsement for AS initially and then, if suitable, continue in more depth into A2.
