1.    The award of a scholarship recognises a candidate’s exceptional promise in academic work, art, music or sport.

2.    Scholarships are open to both internal and external candidates.

3.    Scholarships are awarded at 11+ (entry into Year 7), 13+ (entry into Year 9) and 16+ (entry into the Sixth Form) and are detailed in the following pages.

4.    All scholarships provide up to 10% fee remission (day or boarding) with further financial assistance of up to 40% by way of a means tested bursary. (Requests for a bursary form may be made through the Head)

5.    All Scholarships, with the exception of Art, are normally tenable to the end of Sixth Form subject to annual reviews.

6.    An Art scholarship awarded at 13+ is normally tenable for three years whilst the Sixth Form scholarship is normally tenable for two years, subject to annual reviews and provided the relevant public examinations are taken.

7.    In the case of external candidates, a request will be made by St Mary’s to the current school for a full testimonial in support of the application.

8.    In order to avoid your daughter being entered for a scholarship examination in which she has little chance of success, it is wise to take the advice of her present school.

9.    External candidates will only be considered for scholarships if they are already registered and St Mary’s is the intended destination for the candidate i.e. first choice senior school.

Conditions of Scholarships

1.    Obligations of the pupil: A pupil who is awarded a scholarship is required to work hard, to contribute positively to the life of the school, to be a credit to the school and to set a good example to others.

2.    Obligations of the parent/s: The parents are expected to support and encourage the pupil to reach her full potential and to uphold the aims and good name of the school.

3.    Review of scholarships: All scholarships (except at UV*) will be reviewed annually following the summer examinations. If a pupil has fallen below the required standards in terms of progress and / or conduct there will be a consultation with the parent/s and pupil followed by a written warning. If at the end of the next term the required standards have not been met then the scholarship will be withdrawn.

*Academic scholars in Upper V will have their scholarships reviewed following the mock examinations in January.
